After two knocks she heard his husky, rough voice, and it sent a thrill of desire right through her. He was still real, still human. And, quite probably, still in a state of sexual heat.

She didn't hesitate and opened the door, easing inside. The lights were off in the room, so it took a moment for her vision to adjust, allowing her to see his prone form in that pie slice of light spilling in from the hallway.

"Emma, no, sweetheart. You've got to leave me for a while," he explained with what struck her as an amazing amount of kindness and patience. "I'm not safe for you."

She stepped farther inside the room and approached the bed, finally getting a view of how he was splayed atop the four-poster bed.

Her hand flew to her mouth. "You shouldn't have done this. River, no, this isn't right."

He growled in a long, extended rumble. "You must leave me!"

"So my friend is back, huh?"

Another long, roaring growl. "Which friend?"

"My berserker."

Now this apparently gave her fevered warrior pause. So, she'd discovered a tactic for dealing with his crazed mind and body: Make a stupid joke that barely makes sense and he'd back down a few seconds. Sort of like those FBI shows where they screamed things like, "Doughnuts! Doughnuts! Hair spray!" while arresting criminals in order to confuse them.

River jerked against the mattress, his back arching as if he could barely keep his body controlled. "Emma. Em." Her name was barely more than a pained plea, a heart-wrenching groan.

Her gaze snapped to the bindings on his hands and feet, which looked pretty tight and secure. Yeah, Ari had done his assigned job thoroughly. It didn't change the fact that seeing this brave, alluring man spread-eagled and mostly naked tore her to pieces.

"I want to free you."

"You're not listening, Emma. You're worse than me, not in your right mind. I am lethal as hell to you. Do you know what berserkers do? They rape, they kill, they lust for blood. To taste the tang of it on their tongue, swirling within their mouth, pouring down their gullets. They crave the feel of their bare hands on flesh and bone, ripping and destroying." He jackknifed, straining his hands and arms with a cry. "Set me free! Emma, I have to feel you, taste you."

Oh… God. He'd unleashed his own berserker just by talking about it. She took a protective step backward as the bed frame made creaking, bending noises. He was going to rip the frame apart at any second.

"I'm going to mount you, Em, my body sliding atop yours. I'm going to thrust inside of you, take you. Hard. Maybe even rougher than that… from behind, against a wall…" He sounded almost incoherent as he described a half dozen scenarios of increasing sexual intensity.

She could help him. Deep in her heart, that place that still vibrated with their blood-tie, she knew that she was the one. With a deep breath she took several steps closer until she stood by the bedside.
